A large wind farm in Big Spring, Texas
As the home state of George W. Bush, Texas was seen as the home of oil and CO2 emissions, but that seems to be changing. The state is becoming a leader in the United States in the fight against CO2 emissions and their recent success shows it. Now, Texas is still the nations biggest industrial polluter, but the state is investing in more wind power and renewable energy options to fight global warming.
Between 2004 and 2007, CO2 emissions fell by two percent in the state, while around the rest of the country they grew by .7 percent, increasing in 33 states in all. If we look at the period between 2002 and 2007, emissions have dropped by a full five percent.
While the state relies on the investment that comes from the energy industry, it also needs more power and that is where renewable energy is coming in. Instead of burning more coal and fossil fuels to power homes, Texas is using more efficient power plants, wind power and natural gas.
In fact, Texas currently produces more wind power than any other state.
